Abstract
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the only technique allowing temporary to assume responsibility
of heart and lungs function, survive acute period of disease and then discharge a patient with recovery. ECMO
application for congenital heart defects comes down to the following indications: disability to cut off a patient from
cardiopulmonary bypass after operation, preoperative stabilization, postoperative syndrome low cardiac ejection,
residual pulmonary hypertension, bridge to heart and/or lung transplantation. Besides ECMO is used to support
patients with cardiac arrest, refractory to conventional techniques of resuscitation facilities. In domestic literature
little attention is paid to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation while this procedure is an efficient technique of prevention
and treatment for complications after open-heart surgeries in newborns and small children as evidenced
by foreign colleagues' experience.
