Abstract
Information about main aspects of the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy in the international and national neonatal
practice was present in this review. Analysis of applied nasal CPAP technologies was carried out. Concepts about constant and
variable flow was given, and different variants of variable flow generators were described. Special attention was given to the reasons
for use of CPAP keeping in mind anatomical and physiological characteristics of premature infants. Special attention is also given to
the effect of CPAP on the neonatal hemodynamics and possible complications from this kind of respiratory support. Relevance,
importance and prognostic significance of the use of CPAP in newborns are shown in this review.
