Abstract
The arterial switch operation is the operation of choice in the treatment of transposition of the great arteries (TGA). The success of cardiosurgical correction of congenital heart disease in the neonatal period is due to both the anatomical features of the defect and the presence of additional non-surgical risk factors. One of the most formidable additional non-surgical risk factors is prematurity. Prematurity and low weight of the patient complicate the outcome of surgical treatment of TGA. The clinical case described in this article demonstrates successful arterial switch operation for transposition of the great arteries in a low birth weight premature newborn.
