Abstract
This report demonstrates a rare manifestation of Echinococcus of the heart in the form of a manifestation of a rhythm disorder in a child. A serologic test was positive for echinococcal infection. We report on our surgical treatment of a large cardiac hydatid cyst in the interventricular septum in a 5-year-old girl. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a large cyst in the basal part of the interventricular septum of the heart. Thoracic computed tomography with contrast showed a cystic lesion in that site and confirmed the presence of a 30×32×37 mm mass. Surgical treatment of a large echinococcal cyst of the interventricular septum was combined with the implantation of a two-chamber pacemaker with an epicardial system. The postoperative course was satisfactory, and the patient was discharged on the 8th postoperative day without any complications. Conservative therapy included albendazole to reduce the risk of relapse.
