Abstract
There are the results of examination of 116 patients with interventricular septum defect (IVSD). 52 (44.8%)
patients underwent endovascular closure, 64 (55.2%) patients underwent surgical closure. The age of patients
ranged from 2.5 to 56 years (mean 13.5 ± 9.1 years).
Complete closure of IVSD by septal occluder «Amplatzer» on the operating table was reached in 39 (81.3%)
patients through 1-2 days after implantation - in 44 (91.7%), in 46 (95.8%) through one month, in all patients -
through 6 months. Residual shunt was seen in 11 (17.2%) patients after open surgery. In all cases, the size of
residual IVSD expanded on 3-5 mm in long-term periods.
IVSD endovascular closure was failed in 7.7% cases. Significant complications of procedure were detected in
6 (11.5%) patients. After open correction of IVSD, the complications were detected in 17 (26.6) patients and
were associated with open-heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass.
Endovascular occlusion of IVSD is an effective and safe method of correction and can be alternative to surgical
method of treatment.
