Abstract
112 children with congenital heart defects were examined at the Department for surgical treatment of adolescents
(children) of the A. N. Bakulev SCCVS RAMS. 48 patients out of them (1 group) underwent endovascular closure
for ventricular septal defect (VSD) and 64 patients (2 group) had surgical closure. VSD endovascular follow up was
1-6 years (mean age 2.8 ± 1.0 years), VSD surgical correction follow up was 1-7 years (mean age 4.9 ± 2.6 years).
The study confirmed high efficiency of Amplatzer occluder implantation, minimal complications and freedom from
lethal outcomes. Following occluder implantation left heart size reduces within 1-6 months after the surgery
(p<0.05) but it becomes normal within 12 months after the correction. Following VSD surgical closure significant
reduction of the left atrium and left ventricle (LV) occurs only within 1-2 years after the surgery. This process usually
ends during 24-36 months following the correction.
