Abstract
Despite the advances of modern neonatology the mortality in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) remains high,
from 2.5% to 71.4% depending on the specificity of department. The main cause of death in infants is multiple organ
failure (MOF) regardless the nosologic units in NICU.
According to our observations, despite the prevalence of respiratory failure in infants with MOF and adequate
respiratory support by modern technologies, deaths occur as a result acute heart failure refractory to
therapy. 80 neonates with MOF underwent ECG to study its specific characteristics. Cohort of neonates was
divided into 2 groups depending on the presence of MOF. Deviation of ST-segment, increase of QT-interval,
supraventricular extrasystoles, bradycardia, pauses, mono- and bimodal blockade, complexes like slipping
capture and ectopic rhythms were noted more frequently in infants with MOF. These phenomena indicate
on the development of secondary sinus node dysfunction due to ischemic cardiomyopathy in infants
with MOF.
