Abstract
At present in the world the number of operations for aortic valve replacementin children and adolescentshas been increasing.
Implantation of mechanical prostheses with possible dilatation of the fibrous ring and constantperoralintake of anticoagulants, with the
rare exception, is a standard method of surgical treatment of children who need aortic valve replacement. Heart valve replacement with
the prosthesis in children is associated with potential problems which can appear during the further patient's life. When implanting
mechanical valve there is a risk of disproportion ofthevalve size to the area of child body surface due to growth considerations, possible
development of thromboembolia and hemorrhageniccomplications, pannus and prosthesis thrombosis. Children endure the long anticoagulation
therapy well but some patients who reached the adolescent age rather often break the doctor's recommendations due to
different reasons. The article reviews the literature origins related to the study of late results of operations for aortic valve replacement
performed in children and adolescents.
