Abstract
Introduction. The approaches to the pulmonary arterioplasty in the repair of tetralogy of Fallot were developed fr om the results of previous studies and were
implemented in clinical practice.
Objective. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the approaches previously used to remove the obstruction of main pulmonary arteries in the repair of tetralogy
of Fallot in infants.
Material and Methods. The study group comprised 43 infants with tetralogy of Fallot who had undergone the repair for heart anomaly with pulmonary arterioplasty
in 2005–2012. The control group consisted of 102 patients with the same extent of surgery who had been operated in the period from 1991 to 2000.
Results. There were no in-hospital deaths in the study group, but 12 patients of 102 (11.8%) from the control group died, p=0.044. Long-term survival
and freedom from reoperations were similar in group comparison. The lim itation of the extent of surgical pulmonary arterioplasty led to the decrease of
in-hospital mortality rates without increasing the frequency of repeated surgical interventions.
Conclusion. The adoption and implementation of surgical approaches described above improved the immediate results though with no expected effect on
reoperation rates.
