Abstract
Bovine jugular vein (BJV) conduits have been widely implemented in the surgery of congenital heart disease at the end of the last century.
Their use have some problems, the main ones being the dilatation and development of stenosis of the distal anastomosis. To address
the issue of prevention of these complications and extend the durability of conduits, it is of interest to examine the relationship of these
complications. Purpose: to study the causal relationship between the development of stenosis and dilatation of the conduit on the basis of
a literature review and case report. Presented clinical case demonstrates the relationship between the dilatation and stenosis in BJV conduits.
This fact is confirmed by publications by other authors, which described dilation of conduits with the formation of stenosis or causes
leading to pulmonary hypertension (and particulary in conduit). Cases of isolated dilatation of the conduits is not described. In this way
we can confidently say that dilatation of BJV conduits is a secondary process, the immediate cause of which is the increase of the intraluminal
pressure in the conduit. The reason for the latter may be either stenosis of distal anastomosis or conditions characterized by pulmonary
hypertension. BJV conduits dilation is not a primary process, but a consequence and manifestation of stenosis of distal anastomosis
site.
