Abstract
In this article, the first in a series of articles about J.R. Farre's essay “On Malformation of the Human Heart“ (London, 1814), for the first time the translations into Russian of the title-page, the epigraph from W. Cullen's work “Synopsis Nosologiae Methodicae“, the index, the preface and the introduction of the book by J. Farre were introduced in scientific parlance. These parts of the book reflect the traditions of the design of scientific essay books of the early 19th century, as well as the author's views on the relevance of the anatomical method used by him for the diagnosis of congenital heart diseases in order to transform speculative, empirical medicine into scientific, clinical and professional one. The translation is provided with short biographies of the historical figures mentioned by J. Farre (A.P. Cooper, J.C. Saunders, A.L. Lavoisier, J. Priestley), comments on some facts and events described in the book (for example, the discovery of oxygen and the establishment of its role in respiration, etc.). Translations of some English words and expressions are provided with annotations indicating the original versions.
