Abstract
Objective. To analyse the results of surgical treatment of primary benign cardiac tumors in infants.
Material and methods. The article describes a surgical treatment of 31 infants with primary benign cardiac tumors, which were treated during the period from 2003 to 2020. The indications for the operation were: the presence of clinically significant symptoms, hemodynamically significant and drug-resistant cardiac arrhythmias, stenosis and/or insufficiency of the heart valves, and obstruction of the outflow tract of the right ventricle (TRV) and/or the outflow tract of the left ventricle (LVOT).
Results. All patients were operated under cardiopulmonary bypass (CB), in 29 (87%) cases also with the use of aortic clamping. In 18 (58%) cases, complete removal of the heart neoplasm was performed, in 13 (42%) cases, partial removal of the heart tumor was performed. On the autopsy the following types of tumors were identified: rhabdomyoma, angiofibroma, hamartoma, fibrolipoma, myxoma and papillary fibroelastoma. Mortality in the early postoperative period was 3.2%.
Conclusion. In general, this research has demonstrated good results of surgical treatment of primary benign cardiac tumors in infants, which are comparable with the information from the world’s leading hospitals.
