Abstract
Vascular ring is a rare malformation of the aortic arch, its branches, and pulmonary arteries, with an incidence of about 1 in 10,000 births. The first descriptions of the vascular ring date back to the 18th century, and the operation cases date back to the second quarter of the 20th century. The current classification includes 4 main types, covering 95% of all cases. The main comorbid pathology is other congenital heart defects, the main genetic anomaly is the 22q11 deletion. Diagnosis of the pathology is based on the data of specific complaints and anamnesis, as well as the performance of cross-sectional imaging. Particular attention should be paid to the presence of concomitant pathology of the tracheobronchial stenosis in case of pulmonary sling and Kommerell diverticulum, mainly in the right aortic arch with the left ligament. The correction of vascular ring can be performed with a low level of complications and mortality; minimally invasive correction has limited indications. Understanding the embryology, pathophysiology, and anatomy of the vascular ring is essential for the adequate surgical approach in patients with this anomaly.
